From Places To Non- Places: Marc Auge
My chosen quote:
"If a place can be defined as relational, historical and concerned with identity, then a space which cannot be defined as relational, or historical, or concerned with identity will be a non-place.( Auge and Marc, 2008)"
Marc Auge defined a place as one that complies with the terms relational, historical and concerned with identity. In the case of, as per Augé, non-spaces are open to the colonization of the technosocial device on every stage that has been torn away from its social roots.
He describes places of transport as non-places because it is a passage from point A to point B. As they are not places where we "live". However, within those places are users who do use it as a place to live. It might be a homeless person, or a businessman sleeping at the airport in transit.
"The space of nonplace creates neither singular identity nor relations; only solitude and similitude.( Auge and Marc, 2008)"
I believe I don't completely agree with marc auge's statement. To me, the way a place is used by an individual determines whether it is a place or a non- place. A place doesn't have to have historical values or identity in order to be a "place". For example; a fort built with bedsheets and chairs can be an ultimate place for a child to play in. It doesn't have any historical identity, nor is it permanent. Yet it is a "place".
